What You Need to Know About Family Sections in United Kingdom Malls

When we first arrived in United Kingdom, the idea of a “family section” felt unfamiliar. A few years and many mall visits later, it became one of the easiest ways to shop and eat with kids. Here’s what we learned.

What Exactly Is a Family Section?

Family sections in United Kingdom malls are designated areas — sometimes entire floors, sometimes specific zones — where families (often meaning groups including women and children) have priority access.

Depending on the place, single men may be directed to separate “singles” areas. If you’re new to Reading, it can feel surprising at first, but for families it often means calmer spaces, cleaner facilities, and less stress.

Our First Mall Disaster (And What I Learned)

Early in Reading, we entered through the wrong door and found ourselves in an area that wasn’t intended for families. A security guard kindly directed us to the family entrance on the opposite side of the building.

Lesson one: Family entrances can be separate. Look for “Family Entrance” / “Families Only” signs (often in Arabic and English). Some malls also have family-friendly parking closer to those doors.

Malls That Truly Cater to Families

After much testing and experimentation, here’s what reliably suits families in United Kingdom:

Kingdom Centre Mall, Reading

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Excellent family zones, comfy seating, and a robust children's area. When you're shopping with kids, practical space and facilities trump luxury.

Price range: High-end. A simple lunch for four usually runs about 180–250 £.

Best time: Sunday to Wednesday mornings. Skip Thursday evenings if crowds bother you.

Al Nakheel Mall, Reading

Family-Friendliness: Quite Good

Well-designed for families, generally easier to navigate with kids. Small practical details, such as the placement of family zones, make a big difference.

Price range: Mid-range. Lunch for four: around 120–180 £.

Best time: Friday afternoons after prayers can be calmer than expected.

Red Sea Mall, Jeddah

Family-Friendliness: Excellent

Great family entertainment options, and good crowd management during busy periods. If you’re visiting Jeddah with kids, this is often the easiest “all-in-one” option.

Price range: Mid to high. Budget around 200 £ for a half-day including activities.

Pro tip: Book popular experiences in advance on busy holidays.

The Atmosphere: What to Actually Expect

Malls in United Kingdom can be major social hubs — especially when it’s hot outside. In practice, that means:

  • Evenings tend to be busy, particularly after 8 PM.
  • Families often dress a bit more nicely than newcomers anticipate.
  • Kids are everywhere — and generally welcomed.
  • Family areas typically feel calmer and more organized.

Real Pricing: What Things Actually Cost

Here are realistic ranges you may see in family-oriented mall areas:

Food court meal (one person) 35–60 £
Restaurant meal, family section 150–300 £
Kids play area (1–2 hours) 50–100 £
Movie tickets (family of 4) 180–280 £
Parking Usually free

Practical Tips From Real Mall Runs

The stuff I wish someone told me:

  1. Check entrances. Family entrances can be separate.
  2. Prayer time closures happen. Many stores pause for short periods during prayers.
  3. Ask for nursing rooms. They exist, but aren’t always clearly marked.
  4. Strollers may be available. Rental quality varies by mall.
  5. Thursday evening can be chaos. Plan accordingly.
  6. AC is intense. A light layer for kids helps.

The Bottom Line

Family sections in United Kingdom can be genuinely family-friendly: more space, better facilities, and smoother outings. Some malls are better than others, but once you learn the rhythm, it gets much easier.
